The Schleicher Spin

The latest spin from author D. H. Schleicher on books, films and beyond…

A Wild Primary Season: Barack, a Shot of Tequila, Rudy in Drag, Law & Order, and Oprah.

Okay, so I’ve been responding quite a bit to other people’s political blogs and the latest campaign news, and it’s been well over two months since I posted anything original concerning this whole mess…so here’s my quick rundown of what’s been going on.

Take it with a grain of salt…

or a whole line of salt, a lime, and a shot of tequila.

The Democrats:

Barack Obama:  He’s pandering to all with charm and class and emerging as the front runner.  Everyone still seems to like his fresh-face personality (what a nice kid!), and lame attempts to smear him been shot down thus far.  Wait and see…

Hillary Clinton: Like Obama, she’s pandering to everyone, though making it too obvious she is pandering.  The little hissy fit about former supporter David Geffen donating to Obama’s campaign makes people wonder if a woman can really “stomach” the job.  Her claim of “a vast right-wing consipiracy” while possibly true, does make her seem a bit paranoid to middle-of-the-roaders.  Not good…she’s careening towards a head-on-collision with Obama that could make both of their campaigns implode.  Looking bat-shit insane in photographs isn’t helping either:

John Edwards: The guy’s not getting much media coverage accept when lunatics like Ann Coulter call him names, so declining to appear on the Fox News debate might be a mistake.  He needs all the face time he can get.  He’s got compelling stances and is running a progressive grass-roots campaign…but the spotlight is clearly on Obama and Clinton.  He could benefit if they smear each other and he comes out clean.

Joe Biden:  Eh, he’s good for a bit or two on “Real Time with Bill Maher” but let’s be serious.  He should step aside.

The Rest:  Unless Al Gore gets up off his fat, windbag behind and runs…there’s no one else worth mentioning.

The Republicans:

Rudy Giuliani: He’s riding his hero status from 9/11 for all it’s worth, and for now sits atop the polls.  Once people start gabbing about all his personal life (divorce and cross-dressing…egads!) and Conservatives start realizing how socially liberal he is, his stock will slip…and as Dick Cheney would say, it’s going to dip “BIG TIME.”  Sing one for the road, Rudy!

John McCain:  I just don’t get why he isn’t the front runner.  He probably will be again when Rudy takes a fall.  His hilarious guest spots on David Letterman show he has the best sense of humor of any Republican bigwig since Reagan.

Mitt Romney: C’mon…a Mormon?  Seriously?  His “oh, he’s the Mormon guy” thing is already wearing off.  Don’t expect him to get much more face time though he seems to be in it for the long run.

Fred Thompson:  This guy’s a wildcard.  He’s a hard-nosed Conservative who could rally the base, and I love his character on “Law and Order.”  He will get tons of face time because of his entertainment and media connections.  If he runs…all bets are off.   Just look how serious he is:

Newt Gingrich:  Bad press follows him like stink on a stray cat.  His moral hypocrisy (he was cheating on his wife while he wanted to impeach Bill Clinton for cheating on Hillary) and far right ideals represent the worst of what Republicans have to offer.  He doesn’t have a chance…dear lord…does he?

Chuck Hagel:  I know the name, but not much of his politics.  His “announcement” that he will later make an announcement on if he will run or not is appearing to pundants as a test to see if Independents will rally him to run as a Third Party Candidate.  If he does, it will be interesting to see how someone other than Ralph Nader or an insane billionaire (I’m talking to you, Ross Perot) will effect the actual election.

The Rest:  They seem to be dropping out even before the race has officially begun.

The Independants:

See Chuck Hagel.

Nader is always good for a run.

How about Bill Gates or Oprah?  That could fun!

Feel free to share your thoughts, concerns, misplaced outrage, opinions, rants, and predictions on the outcomes.

  1. Hi, nice post, but I’m curious by what you meant by “I wonder if a woman can stomach the job?” I’m guessing you just wrote that to be funny and to add something interesting to your post, but it really pisses me off when people say “Oh is America ready for a woman president,” or “are we ready for a black president.” I saw on CSPAN the other day something on Obama, listing all his achievements and then this was a direct quote:

“Barak has done this this and this, but the most important question remains: Is America ready for a Black President?”

  2. Girlwrestler…I agree! I was trying to be funny…and also point out how her detractors would respond to that…there are people who aren’t ready for a woman president…and they will seriously question every little thing Hillary does. I personally think she can “stomach” the job.

  3. I really disagree with GirlWrester. It’s hard enough to get a good woman to learn to cook, clean and make babies. Now, they want to work and make money. But still find a million things to complain about. Hillary definatly can’t stomach the presidency, women just aren’t built as strong willed as man. Just a fact of life. Hillary will cry and complain when something doesn’t go her way.

  4. Power That Be–well, ain’t you root-tootin’ funny!

See what I mean, Girlwrestler…even if Powers is just joshin’ us, there are many people who would say something like that sincerely without blinkin’ a pretty little eyelash about it.

  5. Love the Oprah for President seal. Just think of the possibilities of a Winfrey-for-President campaign: Oprah could have Tom Cruise jumping up and down on couches to whip up enthusiasm at rallies … and, of course, the first baby she kissed on the campaign trail would have to be baby Suri, don’t you think?

Then there are all the possibilities for Oprah’s running mate, such as our former New Jersey governor James (“the Luv Guv”) McGreevey? He was on “Oprah,” so they’re already a team. I’ll stop myself before I get carried away with this one … but I really appreciate the link. Thanks!

  6. Lot of youthful energy in these political comments! We are looking at the same sideshow but from a different vantage point in terms of years. My take on where this horse race will shake out is as follows:
Republicans – Mitt Romney, provided the Jewish Press and TV networks don’t float a huge anti-Mormon campaign, will look better and better and should be a contender at the Convention!.
Democrats – I am surprised at this conclusion but I see Oboma scaring the B’jeepers out of Hillary and Bill right up until the Convention. But money makes the propaganda machine a potent weapon, suggesting to this humble has-been that it will be a Hillary-Oboma ticket!
At the moment I can’t see around corners –YET, so I’ll keep quiet until the Primaries have spoken!
One thought more: I have been watching these sideshows ever since 1930 and even ran for Congress when I was 38. Politics in this age of many forms of communications, MEDIA power, etc is a dirty game and it is disappointing to see the greatest attributes of our kind of government — campaigns & elections — corrupted as they are today. Frankly, I believe, MEDIA outlets should be forced by law to idenify and prove that they are NOT seditious, anti-American spy networks! Those that don’t measure up to a Fair & Balance criteria, should be regulated:i.e., punished for lies and similar foul play!

    87quig,
Thanks for you insights…interesting, I have heard some others say the same thing about Romney. And if I were to bet money on it, I would let it ride on a Hillary-Obama ticket as well. Your statements about the media ring true, though I don’t see that changing anytime soon.–DHS
